Alinghi put forth a tremendous effort today in its attempt to defend the 33rd America's Cup. The Swiss team from the Société Nautique de Genève led for most of the first leg of the triangular course, but couldn't hold off the Challenger BMW Oracle Racing. Alinghi lost the race by 5m26s and the America's Cup Match, 2-0.

Team president and principal helmsman Ernesto Bertarelli congratulated his competitor after the race: ''Congratulations to the BMW Oracle team. The boat was faster, there's no question about that.''

Today's race was postponed for more than six hours from the scheduled start time of 10:06 as, similar to Friday, the race committee waited for the wind to settle. Around 16:10 the race committee set a windward mark bearing 100 degrees, just south of due east, and the two crews started at 16:25. Bertarelli guided Alinghi 5 onto the race course on port tack about mid-line, despite receiving a penalty. Another chilly day is expected on the water today when Alinghi heads to the race course looking to even the best-of-three 33rd America's Cup Match at 1-1. Today's course is the 39nm equilateral triangle as per the Deed of Gift and is due to start at 12:06.

After Friday's Race 1, team president and principal helmsman Ernesto Bertarelli reflected on his team's run over the past decade. ''When you are in my position with the 10 years that have gone before and the team I have and an opportunity to race one, or maybe two more races in the America's Cup, you can't call any day a hard day in the America's Cup. They are all good days.''

What's the forecast?
''Today offers some hope as the forecast is on the light side. We've seen medium to high range conditions so far and now we hope for some lighter conditions for Race 2.''

Alinghi lost Race 1 of the 33rd America's Cup, a best-of-three series, today after a hard fought pre-start and a 40nm race. The Defender from the Société Nautique de Genève took an early lead onto the course, but didn't hold on to it.

''The crew work went well. The difference was the speed of the boats. The solution they have come up with on Oracle is very fast. It's pretty hard to beat them on a day like today,'' said Brad Butterworth, team skipper and tactician.

The race started at 14:35 in a southerly wind between 6 and 8 knots and flat sea, good conditions for the 90ft load waterline multihulls. The top mark was set at a bearing of 180 degrees, due south, 20nm to windward.

Alinghi, the port-tack yacht entering the start box, was penalised in the pre-start by the on-water umpires for failing to keep clear. Today marks the third attempt to commence the 33rd America's Cup, a Deed of Gift match between Alinghi 5 as the Defender from the Société Nautique de Genève and USA representing the Golden Gate Yacht Club. The first attempt on Monday was abandoned due to unstable wind conditions associated with a passing cold front, and Wednesday's second attempt was postponed shore side due to waves measuring up to 2m.

As per the Deed of Gift, the 19th century document governing the America's Cup, today's race shall be 20nm to windward and return.

''Hopefully there will be good conditions out there. I think it's lightening off. The big breeze is going away. I think if we go to a good spot we'll get good conditions and we'll be able to have a good race that'll suit both boats.''

Race 1 of the 33rd America's Cup Match has been postponed until Friday. Today's attempt to commence the best-of-three Deed of Gift Match between Defender Alinghi and Challenger BMW Oracle Racing was postponed due to rough sea conditions on the Mediterranean outside Valencia.

''The waves were the biggest problem. I think they were about 1.3m average size in the start area,'' said Alinghi strategist Murray Jones. ''That means we could've had a peak of 1.8m and that's the biggest issue.

''There was a swell coming from one direction and waves from an offset of 90 degrees to that. We've been out in conditions not quite that bad, but it's heinous. I think they've done the right thing by not sending us out there,'' Jones said.

Jones explained that strong winds in the north of Spain near France were churning up the sea, which was confirmed over the phone by Will McCarthy, an Alinghi sailing team member, out spotting at noon: ''It's very bumpy out here, confus ... continua ...

http://www.velaforfun.com/comunicati/comunicato_leggi.asp?art=3004

Unstable weather foils Race 1 of 33rd America's Cup

http://www.velaforfun.com/comunicati/comunicato_leggi.asp?art=3003

 Valencia, Spain - (2010-02-08)
VALENCIA, Spain (8 February 2010) – Today's scheduled Race 1 of the 33rd America's Cup Match was postponed due to light and unstable winds on the Mediterranean Sea.

The Alinghi team was looking forward to racing the 90ft catamaran Alinghi 5 after seven months of testing and trialling, but now they'll have to wait until Wednesday for the next opportunity.

''It was very light,'' said navigator Juan Vila. ''We had some puffs up to 6 knots but they didn't last long. The direction also was random, mostly from the west but not enough for a fair race. The forecast didn't look promising once the wind got variable, so I think it was a good decision not to race today.''

Alinghi´s weather team predicted winds around 10 knots today, but showers from a passing cold front disrupted the forecast.

''Ahead of the cold front was a weak southerly gradient with lots of clouds and some showers,'' said Jack Katzfey, team meteorologist. Alinghi 5, the 33rd America's Cup defending yacht, left the Alinghi base this morning for Race 1 of the 33rd America's Cup amid a cacophony of Swiss bells and cheers from Alinghi fans, friends and families. This moment has been long awaited.

''We have been looking forward to this moment for a long time,'' said Ernesto Bertarelli, Alinghi team president and principal helmsman. ''It is good to be going racing at last. The designers have done an amazing job in creating this boat for us and the shore team have done a phenomenal job in building it. It's time to go racing.''

Race 1 of the America's Cup is a 40 nautical mile windward/leeward course (20nm upwind and 20nm down) and is due to start at 10:06 this morning, weather permitting.

The 33rd America's Cup has been a long time coming, but after two years of litigation from the American challenger the Match between two of the world's most extreme multihulls is just days away.

Ernesto Bertarelli, team president, speaking at the press conference on Friday evening praised his team: ''The nice thing is that for the last 10 years I've been sailing with the same people and that has been very important to the whole experience. Three campaigns with almost the same group make each day more interesting and more rewarding. The fact that the heart of the team has been the same since the very, very beginning makes this America's Cup campaign rewarding and I wouldn't be here today without all the members of the Alinghi team. I'll be helming but I'll be sharing the helm with Loïck Peyron. Neither of us would be able to do our job without the other guys onboard and the team ashore.''

Five requests for redress were brought before the International Jury by BMW Oracle in their ongoing litigation ahead of the 33rd America's Cup which is scheduled to start on 8 February. The five-member Jury issued a decision in the early hours of Wednesday morning stating that the America's Cup organising authority (OA), Société Nautique de Genève (SNG), is correct in setting a start time for the race at 10:06. There is no Deed of Gift requirement for the start time to be agreed with the challenger as the OA has the responsibility to set the start time.

The Jury also ruled that the Deed of Gift shall prevail over any other conflicting rule and the SNG will amend the Notice of Race (NOR) and Sailing Instructions (SI) to further reinforce this. In another decision, the Jury confirmed that SNG's race committee will be responsible for determining whether to start or continue a race and in doing so has the obligation to comply with applicable safety and le ... continua ...

http://www.velaforfun.com/comunicati/comunicato_leggi.asp?art=2995

America's Cup Jury denies BMW Oracle request for redress

http://www.velaforfun.com/comunicati/comunicato_leggi.asp?art=2994

 Valencia, Spain - (2010-02-02)
The ISAF International Jury for the America's Cup issued an interim decision late Tuesday night rejecting the challenger, BMW Oracle's latest complaint regarding the position and volume of the water ballast onboard the racing yachts during measurement.

''We are pleased that the jury upheld the New York Supreme Court and expert panel decision of November 2009. This is a positive step towards the America's Cup – we are glad that measurement can go ahead as scheduled and that the challenger's request for redress has been denied. With just a few days to go before the first race of the 33rd America's Cup, the team is fully focused on race training and preparations,'' said Grant Simmer, Alinghi design team coordinator.

http://www.velaforfun.com/comunicati/comunicato_leggi.asp?art=2994
